Women of Color in STEM Face Greater Risks of Gender, Racial Harassment at Work
Women of color are vastly underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields, but what about their experiences while in the field?
Women of color in astronomy and planetary science face more gender and race related hostile environments, according to a study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets by the American Geophysical Union.
The findings of the study
Out of the 474 astronomers and planetary scientists surveyed, 40% of women of color had feelings of being unsafe in the workplace due to their gender or sex; 28% of women of color felt unsafe due to their race. When it came to attending professional events, 18% of women of color and 12% of white women skipped events out of concern of their safety.
